How to Make a Number 5 Cake & Other Weirdisms

I made the mistake of asking Owen (now five) what kind of cake he wanted for his birthday.

"I want a number 5!" he shouted.

Right.

If this should happen to you, here are a few hints:

1. Don't buy the cake pan in the shape of number 5. It's expensive, and how many chances will you have to use it?

2. If you use a cake mix (which I suggest...although homemade cakes are wonderful), cut out most if not all of the water. The cake will be dense, but much easier to cut.

3. Fill one 9" round and one 8" x 8" square. Bake according to package directions.

4. After the cake has cooled, cut as seen below:

5. Freeze the cake before icing. Yes, FREEZE the cake. The pros to it...it prevents crumbles when spreading the icing.
6. Have your sister-in-law's boyfriend (his family owns a bakery in St. Louis) add nifty trim.

Yeah, 5 cake! (the horror...)
In other news, a Holland Lop by the name of Snickers came to live with us this weekend (Owen's birthday present). Yes, that is the rabbit's tongue hanging out of his mouth.

This website came up when I searched "number five cake pan" and I just have to comment....
First of all, my sons name is Owen. Second of all, he will be 5 next week. And third, when I asked him what kind of cake he wanted his response was the same as your sons!!
Now that he has seen your number 5 cake, I doubt he will accept anything less. Thanks for the ideas. Wish me luck!!!

Awesome! I'm making a 50 for my husband's birthday. We ordered a cake from a bakery and I wish I could upload a pic for you to see how awful it was. I almost cried. Found your site and now I'm happy as can be. I'm going to use the round cake hollowed out and cut in two pieces as the top and bottom of the 0 and add the straight lengths in to extend it to the height of the 5!

Great cake! I've made a number 1, 2 and 3 before. Luckily I got to miss out on number 4 last year but this year my son wants a five too. I like the idea to freeze coz they are a pain to ice. Do you just let it defrost once you've iced it?

So much easier than what I was planning. THANK YOU!
Also, Interesting stories; must come back for them (note to myself). It will be a way to reward myself if I survive the b-day party.
