Max woke in the night with a 102 fever. (Fahrenheit of course...if that was Celsius--yikes!) So Daddy has an unplanned day home with the little one. He seems okay now, well doped on Motrin. I'm pretty sure he's contending with his two-year molars. Earlier today, we spent about twenty minutes naming the various characters in Richard Scarry's Funniest Storybook Ever (a holdover from my own youth).
When he naps this afternoon, I'm going to try and edit a short story I wrote last week, "Tommy of the Flood", and send off a flash I wrote this weekend. Having kids and balancing a full time job often puts writing on the back-burner, but it sure does inspire some wacko ideas. "Tommy..." was inspired by a nursery rhyme and the flash was spurred on by Owen's favorite book.
And this bit is for Cate Gardner (or anybody else who wondered): Snickers, Owen's pet Holland Lop (rabbit), is a full breed. As such, he has a tattoo, SNCKR in his left ear as an identifying mark. Thus, we live with a tattooed rabbit. It sounds a hell of a lot cooler than it really is.
Have a wonderful day everyone.

The Great Escape (almost)
Be forewarned: this is a rabbit tale. For those of you who have no stomach for silly pet stories, skip it.
Through some secret election, I've been designated cleaner of the rabbit cage at our house. While I'm doing the dirty deed, Snickers spends a half-hour or so bounding around our sun porch. It's a win/lose (Snickers wins some exercise time, I lose my appetite).
Last night, Aimee (my wife) said "Let him have a little extra time outside."
So I left the rabbit on the sun porch and went about my business...proceeding to forget that he wasn't in his cage. He probably spent two-three unattended hours hopping in circles.
Maybe I've developed a psychic connection with the bunny, who knows, but I had this feeling that little ol' Snickers had made a break for it. I checked the porch--no bunny. He'd managed to wriggle out of a small hole in the screen at the base of one wall. In a panic, Aimee rushed outside. I figured the rabbit was gone. Long gone.
Glad I was wrong. The dumb bunny was sitting in our backyard. Aimee moved to grab him, and he started hopping, in this half-assed, domestic bunny way, around the side of the house. I circled the house and cut him off. I couldn't help but laugh at his lame little, slow-motion attempt at escape.
Telling Owen that his pet escaped would have been a real horror story.

How to Make a Number 5 Cake & Other Weirdisms
I made the mistake of asking Owen (now five) what kind of cake he wanted for his birthday.
"I want a number 5!" he shouted.
Right.
If this should happen to you, here are a few hints:
1. Don't buy the cake pan in the shape of number 5. It's expensive, and how many chances will you have to use it?
2. If you use a cake mix (which I suggest...although homemade cakes are wonderful), cut out most if not all of the water. The cake will be dense, but much easier to cut.
3. Fill one 9" round and one 8" x 8" square. Bake according to package directions.
4. After the cake has cooled, cut as seen below:

5. Freeze the cake before icing. Yes, FREEZE the cake. The pros to it...it prevents crumbles when spreading the icing.
6. Have your sister-in-law's boyfriend (his family owns a bakery in St. Louis) add nifty trim.

Yeah, 5 cake! (the horror...)
In other news, a Holland Lop by the name of Snickers came to live with us this weekend (Owen's birthday present). Yes, that is the rabbit's tongue hanging out of his mouth.
