Friday Fright-Night

Yesterday, while recovering from the stomach flu (damn you, stomach flu!), I watched:

And it rocked my proverbial effing socks off. If you haven't seen it, you need to. Like right now. Go on. Scoot.

That is all.*

*wait...not really all. I have big plans. BIG PLANS. But I'm not sharing.

Yet.

At the Opera...

A quick note before the main attraction: you can download a free PDF of We are the Monsters for a Tweet or Facebook update. Check out the button in the top right-hand corner of this page. I've also started a Facebook author page: https://www.facebook.com/aaronpolsonauthor You can't deny the evil empire...

Dario Argento's Opera is a flawed film, but the visuals are great. Forget the last 20 minutes, and you'll be really happy with the result.

*Spoiler Alert* Just about every kill in the film is hinted in this clip.

WIP Wednesday: District 9 was Awesome Edition

District 9. Amazing. That's about as much as I can say without spoilers. I've waited for a movie like this for a long time. Smart, action-packed, equal parts empathy and revulsion for the main character...a film that doesn't talk down to the audience or assume I'm a simpering, popcorn-brained adolescent.

Amazing.

Anyway, back to my mediocre WIP. Le Sigh.

What happens when you are 48K into a book and think you need to change the POV? Do I continue with the new POV (3rd person limited) or finish in the 1st person? Le Sigh2

Regardless, I added a nice chunk of words last week, more than I did during the summer. How does this happen when I'm back working full time? Ask the magic 8 ball 'cause I don't know. Maybe I work better under pressure/with limited time and resources.

Either way, I'm gearing up for the action-packed, blood and guts finale. My main character is about to go a little ga-ga too, hence the need for a POV change. Maybe it still works. Maybe I just need to finish the damn thing.

My mistake was too evident now, too obvious. Men like us—we possessed no reason to be in that darkest part of the woods, trapped at the whim of a madman, waiting to learn our fate. Curt spoke like a logical man, but an uneasiness grew in the darkness of my heart like a fungus—knowledge that neither Curt or Dr. Scheller lived under the same laws as the rest of humanity.

Top Five Draculas

I watched a horrible old Hammer film last night, The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, but it made me misty and nostalgic for old, crusty horror.

Today's Top Five FridayTM: The top five actors to play Count Dracula, as decided by me.

1. Bela Lugosi - no competition. Lugosi had the accent, the charm, the eyes. From Dracula (1931):

2. Christopher Lee - Along with Terence Fisher, Lee was the man behind Hammer Films resurrection of the famous vampire on film. And he had blood on his fangs...something Lugosi was never allowed back in the '30s. Watch The Horror of Dracula and see that blood in bright red technicolor.

3. Gary Oldman - Francis Ford Coppola's entry into the Dracula filmography (Bram Stoker's Dracula) had some casting issues. (Um...Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves?) Oldman as the eponymous vampire was one of his better choices (along with Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing).

4. Max Schreck - Nosferatu is creepy. So many shadows...so spooky. This film owes its staying power to German Expressionism and Schreck's chilling portrayal as Herr Orlock (er...Dracula).

5. Jack Palance - Dracula (1973) wasn't a great movie (despite the adaptation by Richard Matheson). But, hey - Palance is a badass.

Wait...where's Frank Langella? John Carradine? Lon Chaney, Jr.? Bah. Make your own list.
