Writercide?

So...I'm thinking about NaNoWriMo. I'm thinking: "I've already written a novel in just over a month, and that was before I really became serious about this writing thing."

But I'm also thinking: "Whoa. A novel in one month. At least 50,000 words. Ouch."

That's 1,666.66666666666...words a day. I've been averaging between 300-500. Can I do it? Will I have the willpower to crank my lazy butt out of bed at 5:00 AM to write for an hour each day? Can I find time after the boys are in bed to write for another hour or two? Will I drive my wife nuts?

And the really big question: Will I have to start drinking coffee?

Anybody else going to do this? Any advice?

I attempted it last year and found getting the words down wasn't too hard (and yeah I'm averaging about 500 words a day or *cough* 200 this week so I'm not sure how I did it) - I think NaNo can be quite motivating, especially when you're in a group and they're all speeding along.

My problem last year was that I didn't do any planning beforehand and wrote myself into a bizarre hole. As I had other projects to work on I abandoned it mid month.

This year I'm going to plan - I hope. :)

Just to say, I read Reciprocity and hugely enjoyed it.

I don’t know if NaNo is right for me; I write slowly, and in pretty irregular time slots. Hmm... but I am considering it. :)

I did it once, and what I ended up with was totally unsubmittable, but it convinced me that I COULD write a whole novel, and that was good. I guess the question is what you're hoping to get out of it?

Yeah, I'll be doing it this year for the first time. I've already started mapping it out and almost have an entire story in my head.

And all I can say is this:
COFFEE
(or, if tou don't mind running to the toilet every 20 minutes, REDBULL).

planning on trying it. I know it will drive my wife nuts but I do that anyway. I am already starting an outline and it is all I can do to stay on track with my current project and not stray to the nano project.

I did it for the first time last year at the goading of Matt Weatherford (The Filthy Critic), and I totally blew it...not even close to 50k. But, on the other hand, that was kind of the kernel of my starting to take writing more seriously, so it wasn't totally wasted effort.

Thanks for all the feedback...I'm still waffling...but with a better internal debate. ;)
