Whatever Happened to My Bad Attitude

...about flash fiction? (remember this post?)

Not that I'm any good at writing it (I definitely don't do the prose-poem thing some writers make look so beautiful), but I seem to scribble much more of it these days. All in all, I've had eighteen flash pieces (ranging from hint fiction length to 1K) accepted and/or published. Fourteen other published/accepted shorts are just over 1K. Let's not even mention Fifty-Two Stitches (which I've sort of taken the lead on since its launch).

I'll have a flash story in a new market that officially launches around the first of July. More details coming. Shout out to my beta readers for picking the winner.

What happened to me? Recently, flash fiction seems like my favorite form. I'll admit--I'm not a flash fiction purist, but really...

Have I become a pod person?

Flash is awesome, and I am totally digging your flashy skillz. Wish I had some!

(Some day, I WILL write a story under 3k... really...)

Flash is still one of my favorite forms of literature. Way to go on finding it and making it that much more enjoyable.

I like flash fiction, but as I recall, I was kind of doubtful about it too at first. Congrats on the upcoming story!

Congrats! I enjoy flash, short and strong, a fun challenge.

I just tried my hand at hint fiction today. A rewarding quick fix, scribbled on a napkin in the car.

I'm a big fan on flash fiction and it's only recently that I've felt it's worth publishing.

I took it as serious work, though because I thought others didn't, I just threw it up on my blog as if it was nothing and it's actually some of my best work.

Though I don't think I'll really consider myself a fully fledged published writer until something longer gets published.

I find it funny how many writers think writing shorter is easier.

Writing good flash is hard. I don't write a lot of it. Most of my stuff comes out between 2500 to 5000 words - it just seems to work better for me, but I gain just as much satisfaction and pride if I can pen a good piece under 1k.

I applaud your record for flash and have seriously enjoyed reading what you've had published in this area.

Now what the hell is hint fiction?

i love flash. there's little fluff. every word is important. and you don't have to read a lot for the ending. endings are my favs.

BT, but I guess like preferences in genre or whatever, some writers are better at different lengths of work.

I've been finding my longer stuff more drawn out lately.

Katey - Someday, you won't need to, because you'll be knee deep in novels.

Jamie - I have to admit, I wasn't looking at the big picture. I can write my kind of flash.

K.C., Rebecca - thanks. I think I like the challenge.

Jeremy - I used to write poetry that way. Similar thing, hint fiction.

Benjamin - Flash is perfect for the internet. I don't even look for a print market for anything under 1K anymore (unless it is a big fat antho).

BT - check out www.robertswartwood.com for the scoop on hint fiction

Samantha - the endings are the best part to write. ;)

Next thing you know, you'll be blogging about your fave Twilight character!

I adore flash fiction.

Aaron Polson said...

Jeremy - I think I might shoot myself first.

Cate - I think I'm a closet admirer of flash, too.

Aw, come on, Aaron. You can't resist a little sparkly Twilight action, can you?

It's funny; I was pretty anti-flash too. But some of the people around here converted me.

Congrats, Aaron!

And until 52Stitches, I wasn't over-fond of flash. Now, I look forward to the weekly dose, and it IS the main reason I added flash to our list of likes at New Bedlam.

Speaking of... we re-open to subs in July. *nudgenudge*

Carrie...(starts to drool, thinking about sparkles)

Jodi - I catch the nudge. Fred is working on it.

I think flash is great, when done well. But of course, that's the hard part ;)
