English Teacher in Hell

My life is a perpetual slushpile. If you've read my blog before, you know I don't like that word, "slushpile".

But the work my students turn in...slush. Too much of it, anyway. I'm in the middle of grading essays again. Slush. This, dear readers, is the real horror story of my life.

I spoke with a few colleagues about it this week; we all found irony in education. Band teachers are usually musicians themselves--folks who really love music. Art teachers love art. English teachers, this one at least, love(s) literature. I happen to enjoy writing, as well. (crazy me)

And then we surround ourselves with teenagers who could care less. Okay, maybe only 99% of them could care less.

I guess we keep at it for the 1% that care.

Addendum: I'm really not that mean at school. Or nasty. Just a bad string of papers. Fresh air helps. Really.

My mom and dad are both music teachers, and my brother just had his first day subbing as the same last month. My mom has a good time because she teaches elementary, and they're still really excited about music, but dad teaches high school. Granted, it's an elective. But yeah.

Sounds familiar dude. Deepest sympathies, but just think: there's some kid in your class right now who might never have enjoyed lit before, who's going to after this year. (I know you know that, but sometimes it's just nice to hear it from someone else, isn't it?)

I was in AP english AND the schools creative writing club. Does that mean I'm in your dorky one percent : )

I was a horrible student so, for that, I am truly sorry to all the teachers who thought I was unteachable. (Sea, I done it. I graduaeted with honurs evin.)

I'm in the dork club too, Natalie. Maybe we should form a writing club and let Aaron teach us. :)

Carrie - I think I have more to learn than I could teach you...

From now on, whenever I'm tempted to get back into teaching, I'll think of you.

I was in the dorky 1% too. But I think I drove my teachers crazy anyway because I would NOT stop reading in class. Except I never read the assignments unless I thought they looked interesting.
