The Ghost of Halloween Past

Finally, All Hallows Week TM has arrived. Time for a little stroll down memory lane.

Wal-Mart (aka the evil empire) used to sell these vinyl costumes with a mask for about two bucks. My journey to the dark side started when I was three and a half (way back in 1978), and my mom bought this costume.

Scary.

As a treat (or trick?) for Halloween, I've put together a podcast of my first published story. If you have a spare five minutes, stop by for a listen on Friday. I enjoy playing around with sound editing, so this might be a regular feature.

More Halloween goodness to come.

  1. Didn't they end up making those costumes illegal? My mom used to make mine, which dramatically cut down on my options.

  2. My Halloween costumes were usually a black plastic bag for a dress and a homemade broom.

  3. I think they caused cancer. Maybe they were outlawed because they looked stupid.

  4. Cate - these costumes weren't much more than a plastic bag.

  5. I think I was underdog, in the same plasticy (icky) vein when I was three. I am thankful there is no photographic record.

  6. You know what's hilarious? My wife has a picture of herself in her costume when she was about four years old. Her mom dressed her up as a pack of Salem cigarettes. Ooooooh, Salems - soooo creepy.

    Looking forward to the podcast.

  7. I have a picture kind of like that, only I was Strawberry Shortcake. The dark side indeed.

  8. You looked great!

Kids in Halloween costumes: one of my favourite things on earth.
